In the late 90s, music was more than just a melody; it was a conduit for defining personal identity and fostering connections. For the members of the band Karma, this sentiment rings true, as vocalist Surendra Man Singh fondly recalls. United by a passion for music, Singh and his childhood friend Prashant Maharjan embarked on a journey to create something meaningful. With the addition of Rabi Newa and Ranjit Newa, the quartet set the stage for what would become a significant chapter in Nepal's music scene. Inspired by Western influences, Karma's debut album, 'Sahar Timro,' ventured into uncharted territory, albeit with a muted reception initially. Undeterred, the band embarked on a period of introspection, realizing the importance of aligning their musical aspirations with the pulse of their audience. Thus, armed with newfound insight, they crafted their second album, 'Hukka,' a masterful blend of Nepali soul infused with jazz and rock elements. As Karma's sound evolved, so did their narrative, intertwining real-life stories with melodies that resonated deeply with listeners. Despite enduring lineup changes and societal perceptions of music as an unstable profession, Karma persevered, leaving an indelible mark on Nepal's musical tapestry. Today, with a new album on the horizon and a refreshed lineup, Karma stands poised to reclaim their rightful place on the world stage, a testament to the enduring power of music to transcend boundaries and unite hearts.
